Component 1: Personal Power
Personal power is a core element of this project because of its potential to help high school girls get a deeper understanding of who they are, what makes them important, and how they can be successful in school and life. The Girls in ActionTM consultants, utilizing a reflective critical thinking process, help girls understand why they are powerful, and how to use their personal power to embrace academic and social success while avoiding violence.
Component 2: Leadership Development
Girls will learn about how to become positive leaders in their school and local community. The girls will be given multiple opportunities to assume roles and positions of leadership through school-based and community-based service-learning projects.
Component 3: Service-Learning
Girls will complete a significant community-based service-learning project with a community organization of their choice. Using a structured service-learning process, girls will develop and demonstrate leadership skills, learn how to address ‘real’ issues in the community, and gain exposure to a variety of careers.
Component 4: Career Building
Girls will participate in small career coaching groups lead by one role model from the local and/or business community. The Career Building Groups will also include a TEALIT event where the girls will experience the social graces and traditions associated with attending a formal “tea”.
